Every spring, University of Maine students, faculty, staff and alumni come together as a community to observe Maine Day. With classes suspended, members of the UMaine community participate in campus cleanup and other service projects, gather for a barbecue and oozeball competition, and attend events.
Last year, those Maine Day events included the Geddes W. Simpson Distinguished Lecture, which features prominent speakers addressing topics related to the intersection of science and history. This year’s Maine Day will mark the eighth Simpson Distinguished Lecture.
The annual lecture is made possible by the Geddes W. Simpson Lecture Series Fund, established in the University of Maine Foundation in 2001 by Simpson’s family to honor the well-respected faculty member. In 1931, Simpson began his 55-year career with UMaine’s College of Life Sciences and the Maine Agricultural Experiment Station. He served as chair of the Entomology Department from 1954–74. When he retired, Simpson was awarded emeritus status and served as the experiment station editor.
