10th Annual Geddes W. Simpson Lecture April 4

The interaction of humans with the environment will be the focus of two public talks to mark the 10th anniversary of the Geddes W. Simpson Lecture Series April 4 at the University of Maine.

“Energy Access for the Poor: How Clean Energy Can Help Solve Global Development and Climate Challenges” will be addressed at 2 p.m. by special guest lecturer Elizabeth Bast, managing director of Oil Change International, Washington, D.C. Bast is the granddaughter of the late Geddes Simpson Sr., a distinguished UMaine researcher and teacher.

“People and Beaches: A Coupled Human and Natural System Through Time” will be the focus of the 2011 Geddes W. Simpson Distinguished Lecture at 3:15 p.m. by Joseph Kelley, chair and professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Maine.

Both lectures and a reception will be held in Buchanan Alumni House.

The Geddes W. Simpson Lecture Series was established in 2001 at the University of Maine Foundation by family and friends to honor Simpson. The annual lecturer is an individual who has provided significant insight into the intersection of science and history.
