Barr focused on student success and the first-generation college experience

At the New York Institute of Technology near his Bronx home, Zikomo Barr earned a degree in business administration with a concentration in management. But he discovered his passion in the campus activities beyond the classroom — from involvement in student government to serving as president of his fraternity chapter. Because of the difference student engagement made in his life, he decided to pursue a career working with college students.

UMAINE ENGAGED: Now at the University of Maine, Barr is a second-year master’s student in higher education and a graduate assistant with UMaine’s Campus Activities and Student Engagement. He’s gaining hands-on experience working with student-led organizations and helping organize initiatives that provide opportunities to get involved outside the classroom, including a statewide student leadership summit.

STUDENT SUCCESS: Barr is committed to helping students recognize their potential as leaders in whatever they do in life. He also is dedicated to the success of low-income students and other first-generation college students. “I’m just in a fortunate position right now, and I try to wake up every day and be as humble as I can and realize that I’m better off than I was the day before. And also, try to reach a hand back and help those who aspire to be in the same position,” he says.
